We met John Grochau shortly after he began making his own wine. He had just previously worked as Doug Tunnell’s assistant winemaker at Brick House Vineyards. We contacted him as he was making his first vintage while making the wine at a winery next door to the Tunnells. We were fortunate enough to buy his first vintage: 2002. We’ve continued to buy from him as he grew from a part time winemaker/part time server at the esteemed Higgins in Portland to the time at which he was full time in wine production.
Many people in our market have met John, as he has come frequently to the market and made many friends. And the biggest complaint: he doesn’t brag enough about himself and his wines…he’s too humble for being such a great winemaker. What criticism!
John has top-quality wines at reasonable pricing. His Commuter Cuvee is often our top-selling Oregon Pinot Noir, and all the AVA and vineyard specific wines sell well for us as well. He also buys wine from Washington state and makes a brand called “Guild”, a red blend at a stellar price. His Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a staple in our market for wine lists and shelf placements in retail spots, as it hits a perfect price point. He contracts from three of the highest-quality vineyards in Oregon: Anderson Family (Dundee Hills), Bjornson and Zenith (both Eola Amity).
