In Tasmania, an island off the southern coast of Australia, the weather is cool, and sparkling wines reign supreme. Among all the producers of Tasmanian sparkling wines, Jansz is the undisputed king. Purchased by the Robert Hill-Smith family of Yalumba fame many years ago, the estate rose in quality as investment was put into the effort to make the best. And they succeeded.
Just like in Champagne, the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes are harvested earlier, at lower sugar levels, and fermented in the same way, resulting in a top quality sparkling wine at a fraction of the price of the famous wines from northern France.
