Kym Tolley started Penley Estate in 1988, but he comes from a long family history in Australia winemaking. The Tolleys were pioneers in Aussie winemaking but he is also directly related to the Penfolds Estate on his mother’s side of the family. Penfolds + Tolley = Penley.
Penley Estate is based in Coonawarra, Cabernet Sauvignon country in South Australia, on the Limestone Coast. Kym’s vines are planted on the famous terra rossa soil which lies over limestone. The hot days and cool nights, plus the excellent soil and subsoil make is prime for Cabernet that tends toward complexity and nerve, allowing the wines to age for years.
We’ve known Kym for many years. He is an energetic promoter of his wines but he also enjoys other pursuits in life as well, much like many of his countrymen.
Penley Estate is part of the Old Bridge Cellars portfolio of Australian wines.
