Luisa is a Friulian winery, very close to the Slovenian border, in northeast Italy. It was started in about 1935 by the great-grandfather of the current operators, Davide and Michele Luisa. Over all that time, the vineyard acreage has expanded and now Luisa produces about 30,000 cases per year. We visited in 2015 and found the cellar to be immaculate. It confirmed what we had known about the wines: they are beautifully pure but not sterile. The wines speak to their terroir of gravelly glacial plain. Michele Luisa, who tends more to the technical side of the business, is more serious and cerebral. Davide Luisa, his brother, is more loquacious and extroverted. Both have their important roles in their successful business. Luisa produces wines from indigenous grapes, like Ribolla Gialla, Refosco, Verduzzo and Fruliano, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Luisa is part of the Vias Imports portfolio of Italian wines.
