The founders of Tenuta Pederzana, Franco and Margherita Simonini, went on a search for a particular native clone of Gasparossa so as to make the best Lambruscos available. Lambrusco has had a tough ride over the years, as most of us associate them as cheap, sweet plonk that is consumed in our reckless youth. However, the Simonini family, among others, have brought this magnificent wine back in its native land of Emilia Romagna in north central Italy.
Several bottlings are made of Lambrusco from the selected Gasparossa grape, each having different exposures and soil types to make unique wines that can be bottled and sold separately. According to the Simonini family, the wines match wonderfully with the local pastas served with a classic Bolognese sauce.
We visited just after harvest in 2015. The hillside vineyards and their location within the top part of the appellation speaks to the quality of the wines. We found the current owners, Francesco Gibellini and his wife to be warm and enthusiastic. Francesco has a need for speed…originally a professional soccer player in Italy, he now loves to do the crazy type of extreme skiing you can watch on YouTube videos.
