Voss Vineyards is owned by Robert Hill Smith of the Yalumba wine group in South Australia. It was Robert’s objective to bring New Zealand know-how to Napa Valley in producing Sauvignon Blanc of very high quality. Voss has earned many awards over the year, including one vintage (1998) that won “Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World” in London.
The wine is single sourced to one vineyard in Napa: the Morgaen Lee Vineyard in Yountville, on the valley floor. One technique employed to insure quality is that the grapes are harvested quite early, locking in freshness. Also, the must sees 24 hours of skin contact before fermentation, which changes allow for addition extraction and alters the texture for the better. After all, Robert has a lot of experience with making Sauvignon Blanc: he owns Nautilus Estate, one of the top estates in Marlborough. And he uses his expertise there to consult for the California operation.
