The Y Series is Yalumba’s brand of wine from select vineyards across South Australia. Contrary to the Barossa series of Yalumba wines, the Y Series are sold at prices more appropriate for glass pours or Tuesday-night-at-home wines.
Yalumba is the oldest family-owned winery in Australia.
Robert Hill-Smith’s ancestor, Samuel Smith, emigrated to Angaston, South Australia, in the Barossa Valley, after departing from Dorset in England in 1849. After hitting the gold mines three years later, he used his earnings to buy land and establish Yalumba in 1852.
In the early years, Australia mostly produced sweet wines for export to England. As tastes changed, Yalumba gravitated toward dry wines and European varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (Syrah). Yalumba continued to grow, acquiring more land in South Australia as well as wineries in other regions, including Marlborough, New Zealand (Nautilus Estate), Tasmania (Jansz) and Napa Valley (Voss Vineyards). Robert Hill-Smith took the helm in 1985, the fifth generation and just recently (2015) gave up the day-to-day to another generation, but has stayed on as chairman.
Yalumba is part of the Negociants USA portfolio of Australian and New Zealand wines.
